Padres Sign James Shields

The biggest name left on the free agent market is finally gone. According to multiple sources around the baseball world, the San Diego Padres have signed James Shields to a 4 year contract with a club option for the 5th year. Terms of the deal have not been announced yet, but it’s expected to be in the 70 million-dollar range.

This helps cap off what has been a major off-season for the Padres. The Shields signing also goes along with the Padres acquisitions of Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Will Myers, Will Middlebrooks, and Derek Norris.

The Padres now have a projected rotation of, Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy, Odrisamer Despaigne, and now of course Shields. Shields already has a house in the San Diego area, so that is also a plus.

Shields had 14 wins and 8 losses with a 3.21 earned run average and 180 strikeouts in 227 innings of work last year for the Kansas City Royals, who made the World Series.
