Taylor Jungman Earns 5th Win as Brewers Complete Sweep of Pirates

USA Today Sports

The Brewers started the second half of the Major League season off strong winning 4-1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. The Brewers also won 8-5 last night, and came into Sunday looking to complete the sweep of the red-hot Pirates with rookie pitcher Taylor Jungman on the mound for the Brewers versus Jeff Locke for the Pirates.

Things started off shaking in the game, as in the second inning Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez slid into Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer while Mercer was trying to turn a double play. None the less to say, Jungman and Locke were in a pitchers duel as Jungman’s shutout was broken up in the 5th inning by Locke himself on a RBI single to left.

Locke was sharp today, but the wheels started to fall off in the 7th inning when Khris Davis, on his bobble head day, delivered a two-run double scoring Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez giving the Brewers a 2-1 lead as Locke would escape the inning without surrendering another run. Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress both were able to hold the Brewers one run lead in the 8th. Then, the Brewers really started to break things open as Locke only was able to get one out before getting pulled from the game.

It was 6-1 Brewers after the eighth inning, which gave closer Francisco Rodriguez the night off from closing. The Brewers then proceeded to get Neal Cotts some work in, as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning, completing the Brewers three-game sweep of the Pirates, winning their 41st game on the season, and getting Taylor Jungman his 5th win. Jungman is now 5-1 on the season with a 2.04 earned run average and 39 strikeouts.

The Pirates, (53-38), will continue their post all-star break road trip, and head to Kansas City to take on the Royals who lead the American League Central. The Brewers, (41-52), will have an off day tomorrow before staying in Milwaukee to start a two-game set versus the Cleveland Indians.
