Larry Brown Belives Gregg Popovich Nearly Retired During 2014-2015 Season

AP

Could you imagine the Spurs 2014-2015 season playing out without Gregg Popovich? San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich underwent a heart procedure during November of the 2014-2015 season. The procedure caused Popovich to miss some of the Spurs regular season games. We knew Popovich missed games, but we didn’t know why. Legendary head coach Larry Brown told Buck Harvey of the San Antonio Express-News that the procedure had Popovich thinking about retirement.

His hip surgery had gone well, but there was a hiccup with a heart condition that was not unlike the atrial fibrillation that Fab Oberto had. Popovich underwent a procedure, and, after he had done everything the doctors had asked, palpitations returned.

Brown says the episode occurred during the preseason tour in Europe. That eventually culminated with Popovich missing two games in late November for a second procedure.

“I really believe he was close to retiring then,” Brown said.

So many questions can be raised because of this. Would the Spurs get LaMarucs Aldridge without Popovich, would Duncan and Ginobili stay? Would David West come aboard?
