Brewers Star Ryan Braun Dealing With ‘pretty serious’ Back Injury

Morry Gash

Ryan Braun was a late scratch from the Brewers lineup tonight versus the Cardinals due to a lingering lower back injury that Braun described to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy as ‘pretty serious.’

Braun didn’t really go into further detail about the actual severeness of the injury, but he listed himself as day-to-day, and Brewers manager Craig Counsell is planning on starting him tomorrow in the series finale.

“I think it’s something that’s kind of built up over time,” Braun said. “I’ve had some challenging days lately. It was bothering me before [Tuesday’s] game. I don’t think it will get ‘better-better’ for a while. Just kind of grind through it. … I don’t really want to get into it too much. There’s some stuff going on.”

Braun came into the Brewers game today with a .355 batting average since August, and is also batting .384 over his last 28 games with 6 runs bated in and 21 runs bated in. Losing him for a long period of time would really kill the Brewers on defense.

“He’s had an outstanding season, he really has,”Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “He’s been productive, he’s been consistent. He’s been a good all-around player. He’s been good in the clubhouse. He’s been a very, very good player. An All-Star. He’s played like an All-Star.”

Braun is batting .291 on the year with 25 home runs and 84 runs batted in all-around this year in addition to 23 stolen bases.
