Miguel Sano Focusing on Fielding and Conditioning This Winter

AP

Miguel Sano was one of the most best rookies in all of baseball last season, batting .269 with 18 home runs and 52 runs batted in as the Twins designated hitter for most of his time in Major League Baseball.

It’s certain that Sano’s hitting is already at a Major League level, as his rookie of the year stats at a 162 game average were a .269 batting average with 36 long balls and 105 runs batted in, he just needs to work on the other facets of the game.

With the Twins signing Korean slugger Byung-ho Park this off-season, it’s likely that Sano won’t be the team’s first baseman, and could lose playing time at designated hitter. In addition to Park, Trevor Plouffe is at third, leaving Sano with likely no position in the field for himself unless he gets better at fielding in the outfield.

That is exactly what he is going to do per Twins general manager Terry Ryan.

From MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger:

MINNEAPOLIS — Miguel Sano has decided to shut it down in the Dominican Winter League to focus on his conditioning and outfield work, Twins general manager Terry Ryan said.

“I appreciate him playing,” Ryan said. “I kind of like the fact he’s got some loyalty and got some at-bats. We have some things here we’ve got to accomplish for him making the transition from infield to outfield. However he thinks it’s best for his interests, I’m in.”

Sano is still just 22-years-old, so the sky is the limit for him to improve on defense and versatility is always a positive for any team.
