Blue Jays to Discuss Extensions With Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion

The Canadian Press

New Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins appeared on MLB Network Radio Sunday, and the biggest takeaway from the show was what he said regarding two of the best players on the Blue Jays:

Both Bautista and Encarnacion are entering the final years of their contracts with the Jays, and it’s clear that both of them want to stay.

Bautista, who turned 35 in October, slashed .250/.377/.536 with 40 home runs and 114 runs batted in for the Blue Jays in 2015.  He will make $14 million in 2016.

Encarnacion, who just turned 34 this month, posted a slash-line of .277/.372/.557, sending 39 home runs into orbit, while driving in 111 runs batted in.

While it’s capable that both Bautista and Encarnacion are still putting up monster numbers entering their mid-30’s, the Blue Jays should look to be cautious when discussing the money that they are willing to put into these very extensions.
