Wei-Yin Chen, Marlins, in Contract Negotiations

Over the weekend, it was reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal that the Miami Marlins had interest in free agent southpaw Wei-Yin Chen, and now, per Rosenthal, the Marlins have begun to negotiating a contract with Chen:

The way the current Miami Marlins depth chart looks at pitcher isn’t the greatest, according to MLB.com, so it would be a great signing for the Marlins to place Chen behind their ace Jose Frenandez.

Chen, who posted a 3.34 earned run average with a win-loss record of 11-8 and 153 strikeouts over 191.1 innings with the Orioles in 2015, turned down the qualifying offer from the Orioles, meaning if the Orioles lose him (which is very likely at this point) the Marlins have to surrender a draft pick.

But, for the Marlins, their 1st round pick this year is protected, and it’s a good thing that pick is a top-seven pick for Miami coming off another injury-riddled season. If Chen signs with the Marlins, the Marlins will give the Orioles their second round pick.
