Greg Maddux Gave up Only 33 Home Runs Over a Four-Year Span

With the news of legendary pitcher Greg Maddux joining the Los Angeles Dodgers front office a couple of days ago, I have been digging around looking for the most unique Maddux stat I could find, and I finally found it:

To put in perspective just how crazy this is, two MLB pitchers this year each gave up 33 home runs in this year alone. Those two players would be Kyle Kendrick and James Shields. 53 pitchers gave up 20-plus home runs in 2015 alone.

As noted in the tweet above, Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young Awards. One of those came from the Chicago Cubs, and the other three came as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

A list of notable players that hit a home run off Maddux over this four year span? Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, and Jeff Bagwell.

Maddux was of course rightfully so elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, receiving 97.2% of the vote as a first ballot vote in. Over his 23-year career, Maddux was a member of the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers, and the Padres over his career, striking out 3,371 batters.

Maddux won the Cy Young 4 times of course, and made the MLB All-Star team a total of eight times. His number 31 is retired by both the Cubs and the Braves.
