Brewers Continue Rebuild, Send OF Khris Davis to A’s in Three-Player Deal

USA Today Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers continued their busy off-season earlier tonight, as the team announced via Twitter that they have traded power-hitting left fielder Khris Davis to the Oakland Athletics in-exchange for prospects Jacob Nottingham and Bubba Derby.

This is the ninth trade made by Brewers general manager David Stearns, and this one is yet another that will help the Brewers build for the future and not the present.

Davis, who will be arbitration-eligible after the 2016 season, batted .247/.323/.505 with 27 home runs and 66 runs batted in for the Brewers in 121 games in 2015. Davis hit 20 home runs combined in August and September after missing time with a knee injury.

As for the prospects in this deal, Jacob Nottingham is a catcher who will turn 21 on April 3. His Minor League career has been stealler to this point, and he was ranked as the 8th best prospect in the A’s system while being the 6th best catching prospect by MLB Pipeline.

With the Brewers finally getting a legit catcher that they can develop in the Minors, former all-star Jonathan Lucroy is more likely to be dealt now. As for Bubba Derby, he is a pitcher that will turn 22 this month. He was just drafted in 2015, so his development will be interesting to watch.

This deal could potentially work out to do wonders for both teams. The Athletics have been searching for some power in their lineup, and Davis, who can get hot and hit home runs at will at times seems to be the perfect fit. This moves also opens up a spot for 23-year-old power-hitting outfield Domingo Santana to start in left field for the Brewers alongside Ryan Braun in right.

Nottingham will for sure enter the Brewers top 30 list on MLB Pipeline, but whether or not Derby does remains to be seen as Nottingham will begin the year at Double-A for the Brewers, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
