Brewers Pondering Shifting Ryan Braun Back to Left Field

In Ryan Braun‘s storied MLB career, he has done a lot of moving on the defensive side of the game.

When Braun was drafted by the Brewers in 2005, he was listed as a third baseman. When the Brewers brought him up in mid-May of 2007, he was the team’s 3rd baseman.

Braun appeared in 112 games at third base for the Brewers in 2007, making a whopping total of 26 errors in 945 innings in the field. That led to a field percentage of 89%, which was a problem. This is why the Brewers decided to move Braun to left field for the 2008 season.

Braun was the Brewers left fielder until he was suspended by MLB for performance enhancing drugs in July of 2013. Khris Davis was named the Brewers Opening Day starter in left, and the Brewers shifted Braun to right field to keep Davis’ power in the lineup.

Khris Davis never had the arm to really be an outfielder, so that may be why you see a lot of complaints about Davis as a player.

With Davis now out in Milwaukee, the Brewers are pondering moving Braun back to left field, and moving 23-year-old Domingo Santana to right field, according to Brewers general manager David Stearns:

“That could be a possibility,” David Stearns said Monday. “We’re still discussing our various options.”

The Brewers outfield is probably the strongest in terms of depth on the rebuilding Brewers, as it now looks like the Brewers are un-sure of who will be the Opening Day starter in left, center, and right field.

“It’s fair to say we’re discussing all possibilities with our outfield alignment,” said Stearns.

Let’s say Braun, who has played 817 career games in left field does indeed get moved back there. That would of course put Santana in right, and open the door for Rymer LirianoKeon Broxton, or Kirk Nieuwenhuis to start in center for Milwaukee.
It should be interesting to see how this plays out.
