Maryland’s Diamond Stone Suspended One Game for Incident With Vitto Brown

USA Today Sports

The Maryland Terrapins have suspended center Diamond Stone one game for his role in an incident with Wisconsin forward Vitto Brown on Saturday in Maryland’s 70-57 loss to the Badgers.

Maryland released a statement that included the following from Stone himself:

“I want to apologize to Vitto Brown and the Wisconsin basketball team for my unacceptable behavior during Saturday’s game,” Stone said in the release. “I regret that I let the emotions of the game get the best of me. I let my team down and I accept full responsibility for my actions.”

Stone will miss Maryland’s next game on Thursday versus the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It’s likely Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon goes with either Damonte Dodd or Michal Cekovsky to replace Stone in the starting lineup.

Speaking of Turgeon, he had this to say in the same press release:

“Diamond’s conduct during Saturday’s game was a poor representation of the standards that we have established as a program at the University of Maryland,” Turgeon said. “I have talked with Diamond and he realizes he made a mistake. He felt very badly about what happened and will learn from this experience. I want to sincerely apologize to Vitto Brown and Greg Gard for what transpired Saturday.”

Stone will be eligible to return for the Terrapins game on Sunday versus the Michigan Wolverines. He is averaging 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his freshman year at Maryland.
