Magic, Pistons Agree to Trade Centered Around Tobias Harris

USA Today Sports

Tobias Harris signed a four-year, $64 million deal with the Orlando Magic last summer, which makes today’s news kind of strange.

The Orlando Magic and the Detroit Pistons have officially agreed to a trade that will send point guard Brandon Jennings and power forward Ersan Ilyasova to the Magic in-exchange for the $64 million man Harris. The two teams confirmed the reports on social media earlier today.

All of the players in this trade were all Milwaukee Bucks players at a point in time with Ersan Illyasova being the most recent player on the Bucks, as he was on the 2014-2015 team that helped the Bucks reach the playoffs with their young core.

Jennings, who suffered a torn Achilles last season of course lost his starting job to Reggie Jackson and wasn’t getting enough minutes to produce. Now that he is going to Orlando, he will compete with Evan Fournier, Elfrid Payton, and Victor Oladipo for playing time after averaging 6.8 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds per game.

Illyasova is a guy who can stretch the defense out with his ability to shoot the three ball. The 28-year-old Illyasova is averaging 11.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this year.

Now let’s discuss the centerpiece of the deal in Harris. Harris is still just 23-years-old, having a down year averaging 13.7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.

This is a great move for the Pistons. They now have a projected starting lineup of Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Harris, Marcus Morris, and Andre Drummond. The Magic now have more veteran leadership to build their young team.
