Report: 76ers “Gauging Interest” in Rookie C Jahlil Okafor

The 76ers used the 3rd pick in the 2015 NBA Draft to select Jahlil Okafor out of Duke, and he’s put up a very solid rookie season to this point.

Okafor is averaging 17.7 points to go along with 7.4 rebounds per game and 1.2 blocks on a 8-45 76ers team that will have an issue to face sooner or later at the big man spot.

Okafor is of course a true center, but Nerlens Noel may also be if the 76ers determine if he is play out of position at the power forward slot or not. No one knows the timeline on Joel Embiid‘s NBA debut, and Dario Saric, a 21-year-old big from Croatia is expected to join the team for the 2016-2017 season.

This leaves tons of uncertainty on who the 76ers pick to lead them in the future with weak depth at the guard and forward spots. That may be part of the reason the 76ers are reportedly ‘gauging’ Okafor’s trade market:

It would be a mistake in my opinion for the 76ers to move Okafor now. I’d wait to see what Embiid brings to the table first before banking on him, because he was a 2014 top five selection that still hasn’t played yet, and we’re two years into his NBA career if you will.

We’ll of course know what the 76ers decide to do in less than 24 hours. The NBA’s trading deadline is at 2:00 pm tomorrow.

  1. Getting rid of Okafor would be a massive mistake. He is probably their mostly likely to succeed. We will definitely see soon enough.
