Pistons Will Void Donatas Motiejunas Trade

USA Today Sports

Last Thursday, the Detroit Pistons, the Houston Rockets, and the Philadelphia 76ers agreed to a trade that would send Donatas Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton to Detroit while a protected 2016 1st round pick would be sent to Houston.

The 76ers were scheduled to get Joel Anthony from Detroit in the deal while landing a second-round pick. The Pistons would then receive the rights to Chukwudiebere Maduabum, but according to Shams Charania of The Vertical, that deal won’t be happening due to Montiejunas’ health issues:

Montiejunas underwent back surgery last season, but has suffered many setbacks when trying to recover from the injury. He has only appeared in just 14 games for Houston this year.

As for Thornton, the three-point sniper is averaging 10 points, 1.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game this season, shooting threes at a 33% clip this season. He would have made a deep Detroit bench even deeper, just like Montiejunas would too.

This is very unfortunate to see in my opinion. The Rockets wanted to land a 1st round pick of some sort for players that they don’t see as part of the future, and the Pistons are looking to make the push for the playoffs for the first time since the 2008-2009 season.

There are still plenty of ways for the Pistons to get bench help that is needed, however. Jodie Meeks has to get healthy, as does Spencer Dinwiddie. Tobias Harris could move to the starting lineup soon for the Pistons for the first time since the trade that brought him to Detroit in-exchange for Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova.
