Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell has already stated that shortstop Jonathan Villar will be the team’s starter at shortstop this year, and now, per MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, Villar is being considered to hit leadoff for the Brewers this year:
Villar is a career .236/.300/.353 and likely isn’t the long-term answer at shortstop for the Brewers. Many suspect that the 24-year-old Villar will get to play shortstop until Milwaukee’s top prospect Orlando Arcia is ready to take over the reigns at short.
Scooter Gennett could be a candidate to hit leadoff as well, but according to Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections, Villar will steal 33 bases this year to the lead the Brewers. Teams stereotypically like a speedy guy to hit leadoff for them.
