Browns Sign Ex-Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III to Two-Year Deal

Tommy Gilligan/USA TODAY Sports

We knew Robert Griffin III would be playing for a new NFL team in 2016 after the Washington Redskins cut him, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter and others are reporting that Griffin III will be a member of the Cleveland Browns.

Schefter then also reported that the Browns confirmed the deal:

Griffin III will replace Johnny Manizel in Cleveland after the team cut Manziel earlier this month. Josh McCown is still with the Browns, but it would make sense for the Browns to see what teams are interested in the veteran backup quarterback.

The Washington Redskins made Griffin III the number 2 overall pick in 2012 after the Colts selected Andrew Luck. Griffin III won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award over Luck, and was also a Pro Bowler after throwing for  3,200 yards while rushing for 815 yards. He had a total of 27 touchdowns in 2012.

RG3‘ as football fans know him as, played in all but one game in 2012. Since that season, Griffin has appeared in 22 games and didn’t play a single snap in 2015 while he watched Kirk Cousins have a career year and was ruled inactive in favor of Colt McCoy.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Dawg Pound and help build something here in Cleveland,” Griffin said in a statement on the Browns’ official site. “Coach Hue and Pep, I had a great meeting with them. I really believe in what they preach and how they can help not only me as a player but this team win games and that’s what we’re all about.

“I’m just excited to come in and compete. Nothing’s ever been given to me in my life, so I just want to go out and compete with the guys and grow with this team. I feel like that’s all I’m really focused on.”

Before Griffin III and the Browns put pen to paper on a two-year deal, the expectation was that the Browns were either going to draft a quarterback in Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Connor Cook, or Paxton Lynch, or trade for a quarterback like Colin Kaepernick, A.J. McCarron, or others. Now that the Browns have a QB, expect more things to go down in the coming weeks.
