VIDEO: Rockies Rookie Trevor Story Hits Two HR’s in MLB Debut on Opening Day

Rick Scuteri/USA Today Sports

While the Colorado Rockies decided to part ways with star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki last year, Opening Day 2016 wouldn’t be the same for Rockies fans with the loss of Tulo.

Tulowitzki started his first Opening Day for the Rockies at shortstop, and started the next eight. Jose Reyes was projected to be the Rockies new Opening Day shortstop for 2016, but a domestic violence case involving Reyes ruined that.

Reyes’ domestic violence case meant that the Rockies were going to have to look elsewhere for their shortstop in 2016. They had interest in Ian Desmond, but he chose to sign with the Texas Rangers. So, the Rockies turned to 23-year-old rookie Trevor Story.

Story, who was the 45th pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, had never appeared in a Major League game until yesterday. Let’s also just say that Story left a Tulowitzki-like impact.

Story took Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke deep not once but twice. He became the first player in Major League history to hit two home runs on Opening Day in his Major League debut.

I mean, that’s a pretty grand way to make your impression, Mr. Story.

Story was a big part of the Rockies’ 10-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday night. Teammates Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado also hit home runs.
