Briante Weber Will Sign With Heat on Sunday, Dorell Wright to Sign Monday

Troy Taormina/USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Heat will sign point guard Briante Weber to a three-year deal on Sunday and veteran forward Dorell Wright to a one-year deal on Monday according to multiple reports.

Weber, who turned 23 this season, helped the Heat’s Development League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, to a 40-10 regular season record. He averaged 10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. The Heat are very thin at point guard with injuries to Tyler Johnson and Beno Udrih this season.

The Memphis Grizzlies signed Weber to a ten-day contract in March. Over the course of ten days, Weber averaged 4.8 points, 4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. The Heat have reportedly been interested in signing Weber for quite sometime now, and with the team set to avoid the luxury tax soon, it looks like the deal will happen.

Weber’s deal will be guaranteed for the remainder of the 2015-2016 season with no guarantee for the next two seasons.

As for veteran forward Dorell Wright, he signed in China after he was un-able to land a guaranteed contract from a NBA team. The 30-year-old Wright averaged 24.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in Beijing.

Wright spent his first six NBA seasons with the Heat where he averaged 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds for Miami. His best NBA season came with the Golden State Warriors in 2010-2011. He averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade, who has a close relationship with Wright, had this to say about the potential of the Heat signing Wright:

“That was our dream, for it to happen again”, Wade said on the Heat meeting with Wright. “I would love for it to happen.”

Wright would give Miami depth at the forward position behind starting forwards Joe Johnson and Luol Deng. Wright will come off the bench behind rookie swingman Justise Winslow and veteran scorer Gerald Green once the deal is finalized.
