Astros Place Struggling Carlos Gomez (Rib Cage) on 15 Day Disabled List

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Houston Astros centerfielder Carlos Gomez is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left rib cage, retroactive to May 16th.

The 30-year-old Gomez suffered a rib cage injury a couple of weeks ago, and it sounds like the injury never improved. Either way, this may end up being a blessing in disguise for Gomez, who has struggled severely this season, slashing .182/.238/.248 this year with 0 home runs and only 5 runs batted in, striking out at a 35% rate.

The injury also gives the Astros the chance to make a little roster shake up, as Houston is off to a disappointing 15-24 start after a ALDS appearance last season.

Yesterday, Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said that the struggling Gomez will need to turn things around soon:

“I think he’s going to have to turn it around at some point, otherwise we’re not going to be able to continue to play him,” Luhnow told to

Houston gave up Domingo Santana, Brett Phillips, Josh Hader, and Adrian Houser to land Gomez and Mike Fiers from the Brewers last July. Gomez will be a free agent after the 2016 season.
