Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (Knee) Won’t Play in 2016

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton will undergo surgery on his left knee and not appear in a game for the Rangers this season, according to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels.

This will be Hamilton’s third knee surgery since June 8th of 2015. The Rangers initially hoped that Hamilton, who was already on the 60-day disabled list, would be able to suit up for the 2016 season, but that most certainly won’t be the case.

“It’s not totally unexpected because of the sheer number of procedures he’s had on the knee and the lack of relief that he’s had,” Daniels said. “It’s not a surprise at this point.”

Hamilton, who just recently turned 35, will now enter the 2017 season in the final-year of a five-year $125 million contract signed back in 2012 with the Los Angeles Angels in the winter of 2012. The Angels will be paying Hamilton $26 million this season as a result of last year’s Angels-Rangers trade involving Hamilton.

The Rangers also saw two other outfielders go down today in Shin-Soo Choo and Drew Stubbs. The Rangers are set to recall their top prospect third baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo from Triple-A to likely start in the outfield until either Choo or Stubbs is deemed healthy enough to return.

Hamilton owns a career .290 batting average with 200 home runs and 701 runs batted in 3,909 career at-bats.
