Angels Star Mike Trout (Thumb) Hopeful to Play Monday vs. Twins

Jamie Squire

Mike Trout left today’s Angels-Indians game after getting hit with a 93 mile per hour fastball on his right thumb from Indians reliever Tommy Hunter in the 8th inning, causing concern throughout Angels stadium.

Trout underwent x-rays after being replaced by Shane Robinson, and they came back negative, diagnosing Trout with a right thumb contusion, per Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Trout told Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register that he intentionally thought the injury would end up being worse:

“When it hit me, my thumb went numb, and that kind of scared me a little bit,” Trout said. “Adam (Nevala, the Angels athletic trainer) was trying to move it around and I couldn’t feel anything.”

Trout is expected to play tomorrow in Los Angeles’ series opener versus the Twins despite the injury to his right thumb. The Angels currently have Andrelton Simmons, Daniel Nava, Geovany Soto, C.J. Wilson, Garrett Richards, and others on the disabled list, and they surely were relieved to here Trout didn’t suffer a fracture.

The 24-year-old Trout is batting .309/.415/.543 with 13 homers and 44 runs batted in so far this season.
