Jose Bautista (Toe) Lands on 15-Day Disabled List

The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Friday that right fielder Jose Bautista will head to the 15-day disabled list with a left big toe sprain.

Bautista injured his toe Thursday night in Toronto’s 13-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies after his foot ended up getting caught in a fence latch while trying to make a catch in the 7th inning.

A preliminary exam revealed that Bautista did not fracture his toe, and he will undergo more tests to find out the severity of the sprain. Bautista was seen in Toronto’s clubhouse on Friday in Baltimore wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

“It’s frustrating,” Bautista said. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work, dedication and effort into being healthy, and this sort of stuff happens. It can only happen by playing aggressively, and that’s the type of player I am. “I could’ve stepped one inch shorter of the wall, one inch closer to the wall, and none of this would’ve happened,” he said. “It’s just a little bit of bad luck.”

Darrell Ceciliani, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo earlier today, will take Bautista’s spot on the active roster. Ceciliani appeared in 39 games for the New York Mets last season, slashing .206/.270/.279 with one home run and three runs batted in.

Bautista is batting .230/.360/.455 with 12 home runs and 41 runs batted in this season.
