After 16 games at Triple-A Las Vegas, outfielder Michael Conforto is returning to the New York Mets, just in time for New York’s upcoming series against the National League Central leading Chicago Cubs.

The Mets elected to demote Conforto to the minors on June 26th in the midst of an 8-for-75 slump. Conforto batted .344/.420/.623 with 3 homers and 15 RBI’s in 70 plate appearances for the Las Vegas 51’s of the Pacific Coast League.

Conforto is not in the Mets starting lineup tonight versus the Cubs that features Jose Reyes leading off, followed by Curtis Granderson, Yoenis Cespedes, Neil Walker, Wilmer Flores, Asdrubal Cabrera, Juan Lagares, Travis d’Arnaud, and Steven Matz.

Brandon Nimmo, who was demoted back to Triple-A in favor of Conforto, batted .235/.291/.294 with a home run and 4 RBI’s in 51 at-bats.

“I know I have a lot to work on, and I can still do that in Triple-A,” Nimmo said after learning of the transaction. “I think right now they feel like Conforto can really help out the team. I think that he can, too. I hope that he’s healthy and good to go and can help this team and spur them on to a nice winning streak.”

The 23-year-old Conforto started four games in right field for the 51’s after only playing left field for the Mets in the Majors. Mets star Yoenis Cespedes said on Sunday that he would prefer to play left field for the remainder of the 2016 season over center. It’s likely that Cespedes performance will dictate where and when Conforto plays.4

Conforto is batting .222/.296/.431 on the year with 10 home runs and 30 RBI’s across 216 at-bats.
