Braves SS Dansby Swanson Collects Two Hits in MLB Debut vs. Twins

Atlanta Braves rookie shortstop Dansby Swanson had himself a solid MLB debut on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins, going 2-for-4 while collecting his first career MLB hit in his 2nd ever at-bat.

The Braves made the decision to call up Swanson from Double-A Mobile for his MLB debut after trading Erick Aybar to the Detroit Tigers. Swanson was batting .261/.342/.402 for the Mobile Braves with 8 homers and 45 RBIs prior to the promotion to the show.

Swanson was giving a standing ovation by the Atlanta crowd prior to his first at-bat in which he lined out. His first hit was of course in the 4th inning, followed by a strikeout in the seventh, and a single in the 8th in his final at-bat of the night.

“It’s probably as close to a dream come true as possible,” Swanson said. “That’s the only way you can really sum it up. Playing for your hometown team and basically going out there and doing what you’ve worked your whole life for is pretty special.”

Swanson, who was the number one overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, was traded from Arizona on December 8, 2015 along with Ender Inciarte and pitcher Aaron Blair in-exchange for right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller.

The 22-year-old Swanson is expected to be a major part of Atlanta’s rebuild. The Braves currently have the worst record in Major League Baseball, and if that holds true until October, Atlanta will have another prospect to add and develop in their farm alongside Kolby Allard, Sean Newcomb, Kevin Maitan, Ozzie Albies, and others.
