Rangers to Sign Former All-Star OF Carlos Gomez

The Texas Rangers are closing in on signing two-time all-star center fielder Carlos Gomez, Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball reports.

Gomez was released by the Houston Astros yesterday after he was designated for assignment by the team on August 10th after an unimpressive career with the Astros after being traded to Houston by the Brewers last July in-exchange for Domingo Santana, Josh Hader, Brett Phillips, and Adrian Houser.

For the Rangers, the decision to sign Gomez makes perfect sense. With Shin-Soo-Choo headed to the disabled list for the remainder of the season, the team will first send Gomez to Triple-A Round Rock for three games before placing him on their 25-man roster.

While it didn’t work out in Houston alongside former Brewers teammate Mike Fiers, Gomez will have a chance to rekindle his all-star form alongside reliever Jeremy Jeffress and Jonathan Lucroy who were traded to the Rangers by the Brewers 19 days ago.

Gomez is batting .210/.272/.322 with 5 home runs, 29 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases this season. He will likely be Texas’ fourth outfielder behind Jurickson Profar in left, Ian Desmond in center, and Nomar Mazara in right.
