Report: Brewers, Dodgers ‘Could’ Revisit Yasiel Puig Trade Talks This Winter

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported yesterday night that the Milwaukee Brewers claimed Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig off trade waivers, but were un-able to work out a deal for the 25-year-old outfielder.

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was said to be involved in trade talks, as the Dodgers wanted a ‘better player’ than Puig to move him, Rosenthal also reported.

The Dodgers recalled Puig from Triple-A Oklahoma City yesterday, where he returned to the Dodgers lineup immediately after spending one month in the minors. He went 2-for-4 in the game while batting in the 5th spot and playing right field.

While a trade most certainly won’t happen now, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports that the two sides could revisit trade talks this off-season:

It’s important to note that Braun was also part of trade talks that didn’t involved Puig back before Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline on August 1st. Trades can still happen, but it’s well documented that trade waivers complicates trades.

The player placed on trade waivers must pass through trade waivers for him to be available to be traded to all 30 MLB teams. In Ryan Braun’s case, that was what ended up happening with him after he was placed on trade waivers. Puig only cleared four teams before the Brewers claimed him, meaning the Dodgers could only discuss a deal with Milwaukee.

It remains un-clear if the trade talks between Milwaukee and Los Angeles involved more than just Braun and Puig, but with Puig now off trade waivers, and playoff rosters already being set for contending teams, Puig and Braun will not be going anywhere.

Puig is batting .263/.322/.388 with 7 homers and 34 RBIs this year while Braun is batting .309/.371/.549 with 24 homers, 74 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases.
