Chargers Place WR Keenan Allen on IR, Activate Joey Bosa

USA Today Sports

The San Diego Chargers confirmed today that wide receiver Keenan Allen will head to injured reserve after suffering a torn right ACL. The Chargers initially feared that Allen suffered the ACL tear, and a MRI made it official today.

This will be the second straight season that Allen will end the season on injured reserve. He was placed on the list after suffering a lacerated kidney in a Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

In a corresponding roster move, San Diego has activated 2016 1st round pick defensive end Joey Bosa from the exempt list to the team’s 53-man roster.

“Keenan means everything to the team and everything to us,” Chargers running back Melvin Gordon said.  “Obviously, I’m close to Keenan.  He’s hurt, and it’s a sad moment that you hate to be a part of.  He has all the ability in the world, and he’ll come back stronger than ever.  I truly believe that.  He’ll continue to work and build from there.  You’ve got to play for him every time we go out there.”

Allen suffered the injury with just over two minutes remaining in the 1st half. His knee appeared to buckle as he was coming out of his break. His San Diego teammates gave him hugs as he was carted off the field into the Chargers locker room.

It’s likely the Chargers will turn to the free agent market to find a wide receiver to add to the roster, while also asking for more production from Travis Benjamin and others. Veteran wide out James Jones, who was with the Chargers during training camp before being cut, is a possibility to be signed.

For his NFL career, Allen has caught 221 passes for 2,617 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
