Heat Guard Josh Richardson Out 6-8 Weeks With Partially Torn MCL

USA Today Sports

Miami Heat guard Josh Richardson will miss 6-8 weeks after partially tearing his right MCL during an informal team workout on Friday, per Richardson himself.

Richardson suffered the knee injury after he landed awkwardly following  a dunk during the workout, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

As a result of the injury, Richardson will miss all of the Heat’s training camp that opens on September 27th. Based on the timetable laid out by Richardson, he could return for Miami’s season opener in Orlando versus the Magic.

Richardson posted the following message on his official Twitter account when the news of his injury was released to the public:

The 22-year-old Richardson, who will be 23 this week, averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 2015-2016, while playing an average of 21.3 minutes per night across 52 games. Two of those 52 games where starts at point guard and shooting guard respectively.

Before the all-star break, Richardson found himself behind Tyler Johnson and Beno Udrih in Erik Spoelstra’s rotation, limiting him to a bench warmer role while developing behind the scenes.

After Chris Bosh went down with a recurrence of blood clots, Richardson’s three-point shooting became a big part of the Heat’s 2nd-half team. Richardson and mid-season acquistion Joe Johnson made the Heat’s three-point shooting more respectable on one of the worst shooting teams in the NBA last season.

Richardson, the 40th overall pick in the 2015 draft is part of Miami’s new young core that features the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Justise Winslow, as well as Tyler Johnson, Hassan Whiteside, and others that the Heat will hope to end up developing.
