Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III has a fracture coracoid bone in his left shoulder, and will miss at least eight games after Cleveland placed him on injured reserve earlier today.
Under the NFL rules, a team is allowed to have one player placed on injured reserve during the season. If Griffin III is designated as the player to return, he will be allowed to practice in six weeks, but must least at least eight games, as noted above.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson was asked by the media of Griffin III was done for the 2016 season after playing just one game:
“No, I think he’ll be designated for IR,” he said. “We’ll get an opportunity to see where he is four weeks from now and go from there.”
As of now, Griffin III is expected to undergo surgery on the fractured bone. He will be re-evaluated by the Browns’ medical staff in 3-4 weeks to make the final determination.
Griffin III posted the following Tweet via his official Twitter page once the news about his injury became public knowledge:
Griffin III hurt his shoulder while getting tackled at the end of a run with three minutes to go in Cleveland’s 29-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday. ‘RG3‘ was attempting to get out of bounds before the hit, but he was un-able to.
In his Browns debut, the former Heisman Trophy winner at Baylor completed 12 passes in 26 attempts while throwing for 190 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Griffin III also rushed for 37 yards in 5 attempts for the game.
After being cut by the Redskins during the off-season, Griffin signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the Browns, with the potential to earn up to $22 million with incentives. Griffin III will miss out $3.5 million this year, as one of the incentives was to play all 16 games.
Josh McCown will now be the Browns’ starting quarterback with Cody Kessler backing him up, but McCown is “heartbroken” for Griffin III:
“You see the time somebody puts into a job and prepare themselves and so for any time that happens, especially week one of the opener, it’s just heartbreaking because I know how much he wants to be out there with his guys and fighting for his team and even that play itself just showed the fight that he had,” McCown said.
“In the quarterback and in every room, you’re so tight and you grow in relationships with guys and so it’s not just a teammate, it’s a friend that’s getting injured and you’re bummed and heartbroken for that guy because you know his dreams and aspirations that he talks about in the quarterback room and the things he needs to accomplish and the goals he has for the team, so it’s heartbreaking.”
For his NFL career, Griffin III has a 89.7 passer rating, 9,804 total yards, and 48 touchdowns.
