Clint Capela Made Over 2,500 Free Throws Per Week This Off-Season

USA Today Sports

Houston Rockets center Clint Capela was one of the worst free throw shooters in the NBA last season, as he only knocked down 37.9% of his free throws in his 211 attempts from the charity stripe.

If he had qualified, Capela would’ve been the NBA’s 2nd worst free throw shooter statistically behind only Andre Drummond. His now former teammate Dwight Howard was the 4th worst free throw shooter in the NBA, behind Drummond and DeAndre Jordan.

With Howard out of the picture now, the Rockets and head coach Mike D’Antoni will likely turn to the 22-year-old Capela to be the team’s new starting center. Capela is very ready to take on the role if given to him, as he reportedly shot 2,500 free throws per week in the summer.

From Calvin Watkins of ESPN:

The Rockets also hired John Lucas as the head of player development to work on weaknesses in Capela’s game, such as free throw shooting. Last season, Capela shot 38 percent from the line, so over the summer, Lucas said the 6-foot-10 center made 2,500 free throws a week.

“The biggest thing is his confidence,” said Lucas. “This is going to be a process — he’s never been counted on like this; he had Dwight. He’s fighting here for his minutes, and he’s going to have to learn to play 30 to 35 minutes, but I expect if we continue to work with him, he will be an All-Star in a year or two at the most.”

Capela averaged 7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game in 77 regular season games for the Rockets in 2015-2016. Per 36 minutes, his averages would read as: 13.3 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.
