Heat Retain G Rodney McGruder, Waive Five Others

USA Today Sports

The Miami Heat announced today that they have waived Beno Udrih, Briante WeberVashil Fernandez, Luis Montero, and Okaro White, cutting their roster down to 15 guaranteed contracts.

With those five players getting cut, it means guard Rodney McGruder from Kansas State has won a roster spot with the Heat.

Miami is hoping that they will be able to stash Fernandez, Montero, White, and Weber on their NBA Development League team, per league sources. The Heat re-signed Beno Udrih to a one-year, $1.6 million in August to essentially thank him for a sacrifice he made last season that allowed the Heat to sign Joe Johnson.

It’s likely that the Heat will get their wish, as they encouraged point guard Briante Weber to return to the D-League team after meeting with him earlier today. There’s also a strong possibility that another NBA team could look to pick-up Weber, however.

The Heat staff reportedly likes McGruder’s game, and they believe that he is ready to contribute right off the bat. There’s a chance he will have too with Wayne Ellington and Josh Richardson both dealing with injuries that puts their opening night statuses in doubt for Miami.

Last season in the Development League, McGruder averaged 15.8 points during the regular season and 22.7 points in the playoffs to lead the Sioux Falls Skyforce (Miami’s Development League team) to their first ever NBA Development League Championship.

The Heat signed McGruder to a three-year, $2.5 million deal with partial guarantees on July 7. He is guaranteed $400 thousand of his salary if he is not waived by the Heat before November 30.

McGruder went un-drafted out of Kansas State in 2013, and averaged 7.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this pre-season, while knocking down 36% of his three-point shots he attempted.
