John Lamb (Back) Likely to Miss Start of 2017 MLB Season

AP

Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher John Lamb is not expected to be ready for the start of the 2017 MLB season after undergoing surgery  to repair a herniated lumbar disk in his back, the team announced today.

This is the 2nd straight off-season that Lamb has underwent back surgery.  Lamb was on the disabled list to start off-season to, and was sent on a Minor League rehab assignment before making his 2016 debut in May.

If Lamb opens the 2017 season on the disabled list as expected, the Reds will be restricted from optioning him to the Minor Leagues without having to expose him to optional waivers, making him available to be claimed by any of the other 29 MLB teams.

The 26-year-old Lamb, who was acquired in the trade that sent Johnny Cueto the Royals in 2015, went 1-7 with a 6.43 earned run average with 58 strikeouts in 70 innings of work in 2016.
