The Heat will play the Nuggets in Denver tomorrow, then play the Jazz in Utah on Thursday on the second night of a back-to-back, and then the Blazers in Portland. Winslow and Waiters will stay in Miami to receive extended treatment for their respective injuries.
Winslow has missed Miami’s last eight games with a wrist injury, and has been placed in a temporarily splint, while Waiters missed his first game of the season on Monday versus the Boston Celtics with a groin injury that continued to bother Waiters for more than a week.
Guard Tyler Johnson, who also missed his first game of the season against Boston, traveled with the team after undergoing dental surgery.
Waiters will miss at least four-straight games with the groin issue, while Winslow will jump to eleven-straight with his wrist.
“I hate to miss games,” Waiters said. “I don’t do good with missing games. But I know it’s best for me. If I could, I would have been out there. I think everybody knows that. It’s tough. It’s frustrating.”
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has rotated between Josh Richardson, Rodney McGruder, and Luke Babbitt at small forward in the absence of Winslow, who will be preparing to get himself ready for a return hopefully next week.
“I’m crossing my fingers that this will be a good week for him,” Spoelstra said. “He will be gearing up to get himself ready.”
Wayne Ellington played his first game for Miami on Monday after he missed the team’s first 16 games with a thigh injury. Ellington’s returned pushed Waiters to the Heat’s inactive list, which he will likely be on with Chris Bosh.
If Johnson is able to return to the Heat tomorrow, you can expect the Heat to start Goran Dragic, Josh Richardson, McGruder, Derrick Williams, and Hassan Whiteside to keep Johnson in a bench role he thrives in.
Winslow is averaging 11.6 points, 3.9 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game this season, while Waiters is averaging is averaging 14.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.
