The Miami Dolphins received better news than they were expecting today, according to head coach Adam Gase.
An MRI revealed that quarterback Ryan Tannehill has an ACL and MCL sprain in his left knee, and not an ACL tear that was initially feared by Miami team officials.
The injury will not require surgery, and there is currently no timetable present for Tannehill’s return to Dolphins starting quarterback.
“It’s better [news] than what we thought yesterday,” Gase said to reporters today.
Tannehill suffered the injury in the 3rd quarter of the Dolphins’ 26-23 overtime win against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon after he was hit low by Cardinals defender Calais Campbell.
Campbell’s tackle has drawn some criticisms from the public, but Campbell says that he was intending to hurt Tannehill on the play, and that he reached out to Tannehill on Monday and apologized for the hit:
“It definitely wasn’t on purpose,” Campbell told the media. “I’ve never been that kind of guy, I never will be that kind of guy.”
Matt Moore will take the reigns as Miami’s starting quarterback on Sunday against the New York Jets with Gase already ruling Tannehill out for the contest.
Miami, who sits at 8-5 on the year, trail the Denver Broncos for the final wild card spot in the AFC due to the NFL’s tiebreaker rules.
Tannehill has posted a 93.5 quarterback rating this season with 2,995 passing yards and 19 touchdowns in one of the best NFL seasons of his career.
