Pelicans Center Omer Asik Remains on Trading Block

The New Orleans Pelicans center Omer Asik is “very much available” via trade once again this season, according to A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com.

New Orleans inked Asik to a five-year, $58 million contract in the 2015 off-season, and he hasn’t lived up to the standard of play he showed in first-year with the Pelicans and his last season with the Houston Rockets.

Asik is the second-year of the $58 million deal, and is making an estimated $9.9 million, per Spotrac.com. He will make $10.5 million in 2017-2018, $11.2 million in 2018-2019, and is guaranteed to make only $3 million in 2019-2020. He can earn up to $11.9 million made in 2019-2020, assuming he meets the Pelicans’ requirements.

Blakely notes in his piece that the Boston Celtics are one of the teams that have expressed interest in Asik at various times in the past. Blakely’s source tells him that Boston is unlikely to make a trade anytime soon unless it were to significantly improve the team’s chances at making a deep playoff run.

The 30-year-old Asik is averaging 3.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in an average of 17.5 minutes of game action a night.
