Chargers Tight End Antonio Gates Ties Tony Gonzalez’s Touchdown Record

San Diego Chargers veteran tight end Antonio Gates caught his 111th career touchdown on Sunday afternoon after he and Philip Rivers hooked up for two-yard score, putting him atop an elusive list.

Gates is now tied with Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history, and Gates feels the record is very special:

“I think it’s special. I really do. I’m honored,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be able to hear my name called in a stadium, an NFL stadium. As a kid, that’s what you dream about.”

San Diego would take a 10-3 lead in the game following Gates’ touchdown, but the Kansas City Chiefs overcame the deficit and won the game 37-27, dropping the Chargers to 5-11 on the season in what could be their final year in San Diego.

Rivers and Gates have now connected on 83 touchdowns in their respective careers, the most by any quarterback-tight end duo in NFL history.

Gates saw a more limited role in 2016 with rookie Hunter Henry by his side, but Gates still finished the season with 53 catches, 548 yards, and 5 touchdowns.

The 36-year-old Gates, who will turn 37 this off-season, recently said he is leaning towards playing in 2017, which would be his 15th season in the NFL, all with the Chargers.
