Patriots OC Josh McDaniels to Interview With Three Teams

USA Today Sports

As NFL teams begin the process of making changes to their coaching staffs, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has became a popular man,

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Jacksonville Jaguars are all scheduled to interview McDaniels for their respective head coach openings by the end of the week.

The Rams are after McDaniels after firing head coach Jeff Fisher, while the 49ers are interested after firing Chip Kelly, and the Jaguars are in the hunt after firing Gus Bradley.

McDaniels has been a head coach on one occasion in his NFL head coaching career, and that was with the Denver Broncos when he was the team’s head coach in 2009 and 2010. He posted a 11-17 record as Denver’s head coach, and did not finish his second season fully.

In-addition to being New England’s offensive coordinator, McDaniels also serves as the team’s quarterbacks coach, working side-by-side with Tom BradyJimmy Garoppolo, and Jacoby Brissett. Today, Brady gave McDaniels a ton of credit for developing him:

“He’s been spectacular in every way for me,” Brady said. “I could never be the player that I am without him and he challenges me every week. I have so much confidence in him as a coach and his abilities and the way he leads our offense. He’s spectacular and it would be tough to lose him. We certainly aren’t going to lose him in the next two weeks. Like I said, I hope he doesn’t for my own personal sake, but I can understand all those reasons why these other teams would want him to lead their organization.”

The 40-year-old McDaniels would have a great chance to develop a quarterback wherever he ends up if he chooses to leave the Patriots. With the Rams, there is Jared Goff, and with the Jaguars you get Blake Bortles. San Francisco is a bit questionable, but it is possible that they will pick a quarterback number two overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
