Joel Embiid Has a ‘Minor’ Meniscus Tear in Left Knee

USA TODAY Sports

This is not the news that Philadelphia 76ers fans were hoping to see about Joel Embiid.

76ers president of basketball operations/general manager Bryan Colangelo told reporters before the 76ers’ game at home versus the Miami Heat on Saturday that Embiid has a ‘very minor’ meniscus tear in his left knee, while also having a bone bruise in the same knee.

Colangelo says the injury makes Embiid very unlikely to partake in the NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend next week. The 22-year-old Embiid will not need surgery to repair the tear, and Colangelo says the tear is not the source of pain for his franchise center.

“The MRI [after the Portland game] revealed obviously what we had thought to be a bone bruise,” Colangelo said. “And there was also the recognition that there was a very minor meniscal tear. But it was not thought to be acute and it was not thought to be the source of the pain, inflammation or symptoms.”

In Embiid’s nine game absence, the 76ers have alternated starts between Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor. Embiid last played in a game on January 27 versus the Houston Rockets, when he had 32 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Embiid underwent a MRI for a knee injury on January 20, which means that Embiid could’ve been playing with this meniscus tear for an unknown period of time.

Embiid is averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.1 assists per game this season.
