DeMarcus Cousins Receives One Game Suspension From NBA

USA TODAY Sports

New Orleans Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for the Pelicans’ match-up with the Detroit Pistons tomorrow, the NBA announced today.

The suspension comes in wake of Cousins’ 18th technical foul that occurred in the Pelicans loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night. Cousins was hit with the foul 32 seconds in the game, and will serve a 1-game suspension for every two technical fouls he picks up.

Per NBA rules, any player/coach is automatically suspended for a game without pay once they pick up 16 technical fouls in a season. This means that this is the second time Cousins has been suspended this season due to the rule, with the last suspension occurring on February 8th against the Boston Celtics.

Cousins picked up 17 of those technical fouls with the Sacramento Kings, and the Pelicans understood the risk that Cousins could potentially be suspended for multiple games if they were to trade for him. No Cousins against the Pistons will just mean more responsibility on the court for Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday.

So far this season, Cousins is the only NBA player to be suspended under this rule. Russell Westbrook, DeAndre Jordan, Draymond Green, Dwight Howard, John Wall, DeMar DeRozan, and Devin Booker have all picked up 10 or more technical fouls this season, with Westbrook being two away from suspension, per ESPN.

The 26-year-old Cousins is averaging 27.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game this season. With the Pelicans, Cousins is averaging 23.3 points, 12.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 2.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game.
