Brewers Promote Top Prospect Lewis Brinson From Triple-A Colorado Springs

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers continued their youth movement on Saturday by promoting top prospect Lewis Brinson from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

To make way for Brinson on the 25-man active roster, Milwaukee sent second baseman Jonathan Villar to the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain. Brinson is the 3rd Brewers prospect that will make his Major League debut this week, joining Brett Phillips and Josh Hader.

While Brinson is not listed in the Brewers official lineup for tonight with Eric Thames in left field, Phillips in center, and Domingo Santana in right field, the 23-year-old outfielder will assuredly be in the lineup at some point in the coming days for the Brewers with a pinch-hit appearance always in the equation.

Milwaukee acquired Brinson via trade last August with the Texas Rangers. Brinson, along with prospects Luis Oritz and Ryan Cordell were traded to Milwaukee, while the Rangers received star catcher Jonathan Lucroy and hard throwing reliever Jeremy Jeffress.

There are no clear indications on how long Brinson will stay with the Brewers, but it’s clear the team’s organizational depth is being tested. Villar is joining Ryan Braun and Matt Garza on the disabled list, while the team will be without Travis Shaw for at least the next two games due to a family medical emergency. Eric Sogard is expected to man second base while Villar is out, and Hernan Perez will play third base with Shaw is out in his utility role.

In 204 plate appearances at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season, Brinson slashed .312/.397/.503 with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases. Scouts rave about Brinson’s potential, as they believe he can turn into a player who can hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases year in and year out.
