Cardinals Send RF Stephen Piscotty to 10-Day Disabled List

USA TODAY Sports

Yet another St. Louis Cardinals outfielder is headed to the disabled list.

Per an official team announcement out of St. Louis today, right fielder Stephen Piscotty has been placed on the ten-day disabled list with a right groin strain suffered in the team’s loss on Friday to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The news of Piscotty going on the shelf comes just one day after Randal Grichuk went to the disabled list with a back injury.

In a corresponding roster move, speedy outfielder Magneuris Sierra has been recalled from Double-A Springfield. This is the third separate time this season that Sierra has been brought up by the Cardinals. The 21-year-old Sierra is considered St. Louis’ best outfield depth option, with a .375/.429/.375 batting line in 32 at-bats this season.

Sierra will likely be the fourth outfielder for the Cardinals, who will start Tommy Pham in left field, Dexter Fowler in center field, and then Jose Martinez rounding out the outfield in right field. Sierra’s playing time will most likely come in right field, but Fowler has also battled injuries at various points this year, so it may be critical to the Cardinals’ playoff hopes to monitor Fowler’s health carefully.

St. Louis enters today 3rd in the National League Central, 6.5 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers, and just 1 game back of the Chicago Cubs, who are expected to serge in the standings after acquiring Jose Quintana via trade this week. It’s tough to get a clear read of the Cardinals intentions at the deadline, but they may need to make some type of move with Piscotty out for an undetermined of time.

Piscotty told the media that he felt a grab in his groin area before exiting the game yesterday under his own power. This is the second disabled list stint for Piscotty this season, as he was previously on the disabled list from May 5-19 with a strained right hamstring.

The 26-year-old Piscotty is batting .236/.348/.371 with 6 homers and 31 runs batted in on the season.
