Brandan Wright Agrees to Sign With Rockets Following Buyout

Rick Scuteri/Associated Press

The Houston Rockets are expected to sign free agent power forward/center Brandan Wright after his buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies is officially completed, reports ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

Wright will provide the Rockets with depth at a center position that already features Clint Capela, Nene, and Tarik Black, and is expected to excel at getting the ball in ideal positioning with star guards James Harden and Chris Paul being Houston’s two primary play makers.

For Memphis, the buying out of Wright comes after a disappointing trade deadline where the team was unable to find a taker for Tyreke Evans that would maximize his value. Wright was in the final-year of a three-year contract worth $18 million with the Grizzlies, so it’s likely he received a majority of the money that was left on his expiring deal.

The 30-year-old Wright had very evident trouble staying healthy in his Grizzlies tenure, appearing in only 67 games for Memphis. He was averaging 5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season, but he found himself out of the Grizzlies rotation and without consistent playing time after another injury.

With the buyout not official yet, there is no guarantee Wright will be available for the Rockets tomorrow against the Dallas Mavericks. Wright will surely be available for Houston’s game Tuesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minnesota.
