Kam Chancellor’s Salary for 2018 Becomes Fully Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

It is unclear whether or not Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor will ever play football again, but Chancellor has now at least received some clarity about his contract situation.

Yesterday, Chancellor’s base salary of $6.8 million in 2018 became fully guaranteed since he was not waived by the Seahawks, with the $6.8 million being apart of a three-year, $36 million contract extension that Chancellor signed back in August.

There was never really any serious consideration of cutting Chancellor for the Seahawks in the end, as injured players can not be cut unless an injury settlement is reached with the player and the team, per NFL rules. Had Chancellor been let go by Seattle, a $19,5 million cap penalty also would’ve ensued.

The only way Chancellor won’t receive his $6.8 million from the Seahawks in 2018 is if he decides to retire from professional football, and it seems unlikely that Chancellor would do that, with the potential of earning $5.2 million in guaranteed money early in 2019 still in the equation.

Chancellor will undergo several medical tests in the coming months to determine his future. These tests will be on his neck, was injured playing against the Arizona Cardinals on November 9. Chancellor also isn’t the only Seahawks player that may never play again due to a neck injury, as defensive end Cliff Avril‘s future is also cloudy. Avril has said he plans on trying to play again, but as Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said, it’ll be an uphill battle to make that a certainty.

The 29-year-old Chancellor, who will turn 30 later this off-season, is a 4-time Pro Bowler who had 49 total tackles, 2 pass deflections, and 1 forced fumble in 2017. Those numbers last season brought his career totals to 606 tackles, 44 pass deflections, an 11 forced fumbles. Chancellor also has 12 career interceptions.
