The ACC has lost their first team this tournament, as the Virginia Cavaliers fall to the hands of the Michigan State Spartans by the score of 60-54. Michigan State has beaten Virginia the last two years in the tournament, and Tom Izzo is now 13-1 in the round of 32, which is the best record ever in the NCAA Tournament.

Travis Trice lead the way for the Spartans with 23 points and 3 assists. Branden Dawson had a near double-double as he recorded 15 points and 9 rebounds. Bryn Forbes contributed in 7 points and 3 rebounds in the winning effort. Michigan State shot 42.5% percent from the field, while going 6-12 from three-point range which is good for 50%, and they also hit 20-33 free throws, which was good for 60.6% percent.

For the Cavaliers, Darion Atkins had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Anthony Grill lead the Cavaliers in scoring with 11 points and 6 rebounds, on a terrible shooting day for them in which they shot 29.8 percent from the field and 11.8% percent from three-point range. Virginia’s best player in Justin Anderson struggled in what could have been his last game as a Cavalier, as he scored 8 points on 2-7 shooting while going 0-4 from three.

The Spartans, (25-11), will move onto the Sweet Sixteen, and take on the winner of #3 Oklahoma versus #11 Dayton. The Cavaliers, (30-4), will now head home as their 2014-2015 season is over.
