The Atlanta Braves are close to acquiring veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips from the Cincinnati Reds, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
With the Reds still in rebuilding mode, and still in need of minor league prospects for their farm system, the return for Phillips will likely be minor league prospects. Phillips is entering the final season of six-year, $72 million contract that will pay him $14 million.
Atlanta is still in need of second baseman with Sean Rodriguez and Jace Peterson the most likely starting options for Braves manager Brian Snitker right now. The Braves appear to already be set long-term at first base and shortstop with Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson. The 31-year-old Adonis Garcia can also be a solid third baseman moving forward.
Phillips batted .291/.320/.416 with 11 homers and 64 RBIs in 141 regular season games in 2016.
