The Milwaukee Brewers announced earlier today that the team has acquired infielder/outfielder Ryan Cordell as the player to be named later from the August 1st trade that sent Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress to the Texas Rangers.

The official trade now reads as Lucroy and Jeffress to Texas, and Lewis Brinson, Luis Ortiz, and Cordell to Milwaukee.
Cordell, 24, was ranked as the Rangers 6th best prospect and was in the top ten to start the season. He enters the Brewers list as the organization’s 18th best prospect.
At Double-A Frisco this season, Cordell batted .264/.319/.484 with 19 homers, 70 RBIs, 22 doubles, 5 triples, and 12 stolen bases. Milwaukee will have to add Cordell to it’s 40-man roster this winter to protect him for the rule five draft.
In MLB Pipeline’s scouting write-up on Cordell, it was noted that Cordell showed some of the “best all-around tools” in the Rangers farm system this season. While he has played the infield in the past, most see him profiling as a corner outfielder.
Here are the Brewers updated top 30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, who graded the Brewers as the best minor league system in all of baseball:
3: Corey Ray
4: Josh Hader
5: Luis Ortiz
7: Trent Clark
9: Gilbert Lara
10: Isan Diaz
11: Cody Ponce
12: Marcos Diplan
13: Kodi Medeiros
14: Jorge Lopez
15: Jacob Nottingham
16: Monte Harrison
17: Lucas Erceg
18: Ryan Cordell
19: Devin Williams
20: Corbin Burnes
21: Miguel Diaz

24: Demi Orimoloye
25: Jake Gatewood
26: Brandon Woodruff
27: Tyrone Taylor

Milwaukee’s farm system has a ton of depth, especially at every outfield spot and at shortstop. It should be interesting to see how the farm system looks a few years down the road when the Brewers plan to be back to playing winning baseball under general manager David Stearns.
