Chargers Strike Three-Year Extension With CB Casey Hayward

One of the NFL’s top corners is staying in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday evening announced that they’ve agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract with cornerback Casey Hayward to keep Hayward with the team until 2022. Hayward was under contract for the 2018 season at a base salary of $3.25 million, but it makes sense for the organization to not allow Hayward to test the open market next spring.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that Hayward’s extension includes $20 million in guarantees, and will have an average annual salary of $12 million per year.

Since leaving the Green Bay Packers for the Chargers in 2016, Hayward has became one of the top corners in the NFL, as previously mentioned above. Since the 2011 season, only Richard Sherman has allowed a lower passer rating in coverage than Hayward. The 28-year-old Hayward has also made two straight Pro Bowls and has been named a second-team all-pro two straight seasons as well.

Hayward took to Twitter to celebrate the extension, thanking the Chargers for believing in him:

Hayward started all 16 games for the Chargers in 2017, registering 40 total tackles, 22 pass deflections, and 4 interceptions.
