Indianapolis Colts rookie safety Malik Hooker has officially been placed on injured reserve, per an official team announcement on Tuesday. Hooker suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Indianapolis’ loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.

This designation will officially end what was looking to be a promising rookie season for the 15th overall draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, who was drawing comparisons to legendary safety Ed Reed before the draft with his work in Ohio State’s secondary.

Darius Butler, who was the starter before Hooker arrivcd this season, will once again have that role. Hooker sustained the injury after he was blindsided on a downfield block. The block came after Hooker successfully pushed Jaguars wide receiver Allen Hurns out of bounds, and the block caused Hooker’s knee to buckle and immediately fall onto the ground.

The 21-year-old Hooker will finish his rookie season with 22 combined tackles, 4 pass deflections, and 3 interceptions. Those 3 interceptions currently have him tied for 3rd in the NFL with Antoine Bethea, Brandon Carr, Harrison Smith, Jason McCourty, Kenny Vaccaro, Darius Slay, Damarious Randall, and Tashaun Gipson. Hooker and those 7 other players only trail Kevin Byard and Micah Hyde for the league lead.

Hooker was also one of Pro Football Focus’ top graded safeties this season, as CBS Sports notes that Hooker was ranked 9th among all safeties in the league in cover yards per snap.

With the Colts now sitting at 2-5 already without Andrew Luck and now Hooker, Indianapolis’ playoff hopes do not look all that promising.
