Last off-season, the Houston Texans decided to cut Andre Johnson, who spent 12 years in Houston, making the Pro Bowl seven times. Johnson was cut to make a rising star in DeAndre Hopkins the team’s number one wideout, and Hopkins didn’t disappoint.
Hopkins scored 11 touchdowns this year on 111 catches, racking up a total of 1,521 receiving yards, helping the Texans return to the playoffs. The Texans believed in him, so now Hopkins wants to return the favor to the franchise:
“If I can play my whole career here, I would,” Hopkins said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “I love this place. This organization took a chance on drafting me.”
Hopkins is still only just 23-years-old, and won’t turn 24 until June. He is set to hit the open market after the 2016 season, and if these comments are any indication, Hopkins will still be a Texan. The scary thing is Hopkins says he isn’t fully developed yet:
“There’s a lot that I need to improve on, YAC [yards after the catch], which I finished last in,” Hopkins said. “Being a better leader, not getting frustrated when things aren’t going my way, just being a leader of this team.”
Another scary thing here is that Hopkins was dealing with spotty quarterback play all season. One day, Brian Hoyer would be throwing him the ball, then it would by Ryan Mallett and it even reached the point where Brandon Weeden was airing it out.
