Giancarlo Stanton Smacks 50th Homer of Season, Marlins Sweep San Diego

Miami Marlins superstar Giancarlo Stanton can not be stopped, and today, the San Diego Padres felt his wrath, just like the rest of Major League Baseball has since the all-star break.

Stanton smacked his 50th homer of the season off of Padres lefty Clayton Richard (who also homered in the game) in Miami’s 6-2 win over the Padres, which made him the first national league player since Prince Fielder in 2007 with the Milwaukee Brewers to hit 50 home runs in a single-season, as Fielder finished with an even 50.

The 27-year-old Stanton will do even more than just that, as he is currently on-pace to become the 6th different player in Major League history to hit 60 homers in a season, which would throw his name into the conversation with Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Maris, and Babe Ruth.

In-addition to being on-pace to join the 60 homer club for a season, Stanton is just the sixth player ever to reach 50 homers in a season before the end of August, joining Bonds, Maris, McGwire, Sosa, and Luis Gonzalez. Here’s a look at Stanton’s 50th bomb of the season down below, which traveled 425 feet and left the bat at 112 miles per hour, per Statcast:

Stanton is now batting .296/.389/.670 with those 50 homers and 108 runs batted in. Stanton’s 108 RBIs have him atop the Major League leader board as well, with Colorado Rockies stud third baseman Nolan Arenado.
